TV-Shows-Of-The-Day: 90210

So, yesterday, *finally!!!*, I got to watch 90210, the fourth series of the-infamous-never-ending-uber-popular-sometimes-shallow-teen-drama-of-all-time, Beverly Hills 90210.  Yipieeee!!!! I'm so excited to watch it, have been waiting for it for 2 months, and it is finally here (Ok, not actually HERE in Indonesian TV, but I download it the internet).
Gosh! I was so excited to watch the show, gue harus menunggu hasil pengunduhan-nya selama 1 minggu (file cukup besar, 700mb, terdiri dari 2 episode pilot, an 2 hour premiere).

The show is directed by Rob Thomas, the man behind Veronica Mars, dan ditayangkan di The CW channel *The channel that brought us Gossip Girl, Supernatural, One Tree Hill, America's Next Top Model, Reaper and some other teen-young-adult-esque shows*, setiap hari Selasa, jam 08.00 malam, waktu setempat.

First impression *and reaction* after watching the show, not-so-good. I was pretty dissapointed by the show, it was not THAT good. Yup, gue merasa, 2 seri pertama ini tidak cukup membuat gue tertarik untuk menonton lebih lanjut. Mungkin karena gue terperangkap dengan media frenzy about the show, so I feel excited too.

I was also comparing it with two other uber-teen-drama series, my-own-favorite-show, The OC and Gossip Girl. These teen-dramas have a very good pilot episode, and by just watching the for the first time, you will be hooked for the next episodes. But, 90210, not-so-much a hooked up material. Sorry guys....

So, what the story of this new teen drama?
90210 tells the story of the Wilson family, especially Annie Wilson (Shenae Grimes) and her brother Dixon Wilson (Tristan Wilds). Sebagai anak baru di West Beverly High, mereka harus memulai a brand new life, that *obviously* a very different life, not exactly better than Kansas, but, it's different. So, they moved with their parents, dad Harry Wilson (Rob Estes) and mom Debbie (Lori Loughlin) to Beverly Hills so they can keep an eye on Harry's mother Tabitha (Jessica Walter), a feisty-but-faded former television star and a charter member of the Betty Ford Clinic. For both of them, the awkwardness of being the new kids is made worse by the fact that their dad has taken a job as the high school principal. School itself is one big culture shock for Annie, a sweet and friendly girl with a passion for the theater, and Dixon, a star athlete and scholar who was adopted by the Wilson family after they took him in as a foster child. They have such a strong bonding so they can face  their new cliques and classmates, including Naomi Clark (AnnaLynne McCord), a hot, spoiled, rich girl; Ethan Ward (Dustin Milligan), a popular jock whose abilities rival Dixon's; Navid (Michael Steger), an aspiring reporter who heads up the school's daily newscast; and Erin "Silver" Silver (Jessica Stroup), a rebel who produces and stars in a YouTube-ish video series. How about the faculty members? Hmmm, they seems to hip and sophisticated too, such as smart and funny teacher Ryan Matthews (Ryan Eggold), beautiful guidance counselor Kelly Taylor (Jennie Garth) *one of the original 90210-ers* and successful theater actress turned high school musical director Brenda Walsh (Shannen Doherty) *also one of the original 90210-ers, can't believe she even made friends with Kelly, GOSH!!! The drama!*. Wow, so much for the story huh?

Jadi, apa sih yang membuat gue kurang begitu suka (ok, belum tentu juga sih, maybe after watching the next episode, mungkin I'll be hooked up too...) dengan 90210?

Hmmm, ok, first, comparing to Gossip Girl (GG), sejauh ini 90210 don't have the fashion extravaganza like GG. New Yorker style comparing to the laid-back-Californian style, YA IYALAH, lebih bagus GG. 90210 juga tidak memiliki quirky-ness ala The OC, still less-comedy, less-sarcasm, lots of drama *of course*.
Selain itu, untuk cast, not-so-eye-candy-enough for me, mungkin Erin "Silver" Silver yang cukup menyita perhatian, but other than that, not-so-much.
Story, teen-drama-typical, dengan klasifikasi tokoh-tokoh: the girl next door, the star-jock, the popular-back-stabing-cold-hearted-bitch-girl, the outsider, the geek-misfit. Cerita seputar kehidupan f*cked-up-spoiled-rich-kid yang dipenuhi dengan peer-preasure, lying-back-stabbing-chick-fights, hard-junkie-fashion-extravaganza, pop-cultural-references, dan berbagai macam hal-hal lainnya. Semuanya sama, and they (the producers & scriptwrites) have to come up with something new, if not, people are going to leave the show. The popular zip code tidak akan bisa menyelamatkan teen-drama ini kalau tidak ada sesuatu yang membedakannya dengan serial-serial lain.

So, excited to watch? Buy the *pirated* dvd (it's available for the pilot episodes) or maybe download it yourself.

So, Mr. E is downloading the third episode of 90210, and going to watch it tonight *along with the new episode of Gossip Girl*, it better be good! *crossing my fingers*
